MINDSET: Five real life examples of winning growth mindsets

No matter how much you hear about how your mindset can affect your life or how much you “get it” – it can be hard to keep the faith when life throws you a curveball, trips you up, or sends a little temptation your way!

To help, we’re going to take a little detour into the celebrity world and share five very different (and maybe controversial) takes on mindset and the types of success it can inspire.

So, whether you’re in business, show business or even the business of self-promotion, we hope you find somebody to inspire you when that nagging voice starts to get a little too loud to resist!

Katy Perry

Worldwide fame and a position at the top of the Forbes “top-earning women” three years in a row are a far cry from Katy Perry’s childhood where her family relied on Church-foodstamps to survive. Love or loathe her music, Katy’s story is surprisingly inspiring and shows what can be achieved with a view of the world she sums up as –

“I came from nothing and created this world on my own strength”.

JK Rowling

Today we all know JK Rowling as the author of the Harry Potter books, but to get there she had to overcome rejection from Oxford University, losing her mother to MS, a failed marriage in Portugal, and a penniless return to the UK – a period in which she describes herself as “the biggest failure she knew”.

But that’s where her growth mindset carried her to success.

“Failure meant stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all of my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one area I believed I truly belonged”.

Michael Phelps

From the youngest male swimmer in the Olympics to holding the world record for most medal wins held, Michael Phelps needs little introduction. What’s less well known is that to get there he had to overcome the divorce of his parents, a struggle with ADHD and depression, and even the contemplation of suicide. Michael’s story is truly inspiring, and his is our most favourite quote on this list –

“The more you dream, the farther you get”.

Donald Trump

Our most controversial inclusion on today’s list is none other than the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Politics and controversy aside, Trump has faced-down bankruptcy four times and consistently been a presence on Forbes Celeb 100 list. His limitless self-belief has propelled him into a job that nobody would have expected just a few years ago. If there’s one thing we can take away from “the Don” it’s this one piece of sagely advice –

“You have to have great confidence in yourself”

Bethany Hamilton

The least recognisable name on our list, but probably the most inspiring, Bethany is an American professional surfer with over a decade of wins and podium finishes to her name. What makes her story truly inspiring is that her success came after losing her left arm and over 60% of her blood in a tiger shark attack. Despite the trauma of the incident, Bethany returned to surfing just one month after the attack, and just three months later entered a major competition.

We’ll leave you today with a quote from her book Soul Surfer (which was turned into a film of the same name) –

“Life is a lot like surfing… When you get caught in the impact zone, you’ve got to just get back up. Because you never know what may be over the next wave.”
