My Top 5 Favourite Hikes in the Lake District

HiI’m Katy from @kateoutdoors and I live in the Lake District! 👋🏼

I started my hiking journey last year and have loved every minute of it! Spending time outdoors is so rewarding mentally and physically! Hiking is really important to me because it has given me the confidence and motivation to do things on my own and live in the moment!

Catbells, Keswick

Taking the route starting from the Catbells car park. There is limited space but plenty of lay-bys around or you can start from Keswick. This hike is perfect for beginners with beautiful views looking over Derwentwater and Keswick. A great one to do for sunrise/sunset. One of my favourite places to head to afterwards is Lake Road Brunch in Keswick. They do the BEST pancakes there!

Helm Crag, Grasmere

I’ve done this peak multiple times and never get bored of it. Again great for beginners, and family friendly. Starting the route from Grasmere village, which has always been one of my favourite places to visit. If you love cute cafes and picturesque views definitely check it out. This is also the home of the famous Grasmere gingerbread! If you’ve seen this advertise online - yes It’s definitely worth the hype.

Fairfield Horseshoe, Ambleside

If you fancy a longer hike in the warmer months I would definitely recommend checking this one out. Taking around 5/6 hours to complete in total, it’s a straight forward route and the views are amazing! If you’ve just started your Wainwright journey this one ticks off eight which is a great kickstart for you. Ambleside has plenty of parking available and loads of great places to eat, one of my favourites being The flying fleece.

Loughrigg Fell & Rydal Caves, Grasmere

This loop is a great beginner trail and also a lovely day out with the kids.It looks over Rydal water & Grasmere village and can get busy in the summer but there’s plenty of parking in Grasmere. You have to check out Badgers bar is you do visit,It’s one of my favourite pubs! So cosy and there’s a family of badgers that live close by (hence the name) which is so cute.

Coniston Old Man, Coniston

Another great hike for Wainwright baggers as you can continue on to complete more such as Brim Fell, Dow Crag etc. Coniston is a beautiful little village, if you’re planning to visit the Lake District definitely head there for a day trip!

My go to items I pack with me are:

  • Waterproofs - ACAI cloud jacket. Super compact and perfect for the Lake District weather.
  • Extra layers - ACAI beanie. My current favourite colours are the Almond and Mango.
  • Spare socks - ACAI Hiking socks. Super soft and comfortable!

I hope these have given you a little bit more of an idea of what hiking in the Lake District is like. Hiking has become a huge part of my life and I hope to continue inspiring others to explore too- Happy hiking!
